When optimizing your website to appear high up on the search engines there are various different concepts with regards to the best methods to use but when it comes to matters that will hamper your SEO efforts there are some things that most SEO experts agree on.
Not having a title tag - It is of utmost importance that every page on your site has a title tag. If you do not give your web pages title tags that contain your keywords you will be unable to be found by the search engines and you will not get listed in the rankings. Make your title tags relevant to their specific pages and include the definitive keyword for the page in the title tag.
Overuse of images, graphics or flash - Having a fantastic looking website may be easy on the eye but the search engines programs do not have eyes and if you do not have text content on your site that includes your keywords and other relevant information, the search engines may not be able to find out what your site is all about and therefore you may not get listed in the results. Obviously, the best thing to do is to get a happy balance between images/graphics and flash and text. Then you will have a great looking site but the real information is still there for the search engines to find.
You need to do all you can to assist your SEO efforts and cutting out these commonly made mistakes will only help you to get those higher rankings you are after.
