Social bookmarking, when it first arrived was a novel idea that a lot of people liked to play with. Fast forward a few years and it has become a highly effective means of driving traffic and making money online. Millions of people use the services like Digg and Delicious every year to post their bookmarks, show their friends new links, and create viral interest in new sites and services. Using this innate curiosity, you can generate additional traffic to your site and develop a top traffic generating page in no time.
What Social Bookmarking Needs
Social bookmarking needs only one real thing - and that is an audience. The best part about this though is that you can create an audience. Say you’re selling a new skin clearing cream on your website and you want to generate more traffic through social bookmarks. Instead of just bookmarking a page that you created on Digg and saying it helps to solve skin problems, create a problem that it solved that will resonate with readers. For example, you might showcase a teenager who was able to go to homecoming because the cream cleared up their skin problems.
It might not seem very original, but it will create a more captive audience because they will identify with it. To effectively grab an audience you need to do one of the following:
* Identify With Them
* Entertain Them
* Capture Them
* Solve a Problem for Them
If you can do one of these for things, you will be able to keep their attention long enough with the 200 character blurbs that most social bookmarks provide. But, a normal site with a normal bookmark is no more exciting than the results in a search engine; you need to go above and beyond that.
Drawing Them In
To truly and honestly make extra money online, you need to think virally and with social bookmarking, thinking virally is simple. You just need to think of what other people would be willing to approve. Sites like Digg only require that other users click the “Digg It” button. If your page is interesting or valuable enough to make them do this, it will spread like wildfire. It is a different way of producing content online - one in which you must create content to be interesting and captivating - but if you manage to pull it off, your traffic will soar.
