How to Check How Competitive Your Keyphrases Are

When it comes to search engine optimisation your keyphrases are one of the most important factors and it’s essential that you get this right. So how do you check if a keyphrase is good? This will depend on the strength of your website but below I will give you some tips on researching keyphrases for a new website. Things to consider are:

Competitive of your keyphrases

If you type the keyphrase “SEO” into Google on the top right you will see results 1-10 of about 263,000,000 and if you were thinking this means this is a highly competitive keyphrase then on this occasion you would be right but this is not always the case. The formula KEI which stands for keyphrase effectiveness index is based on this. It analyses the popularity of the search and competing WebPages and gives a score out 100. The higher the score better the keyphrase.

Systems like keyword discovery and Wordtracker use these systems. However this system is slightly flawed. This may be able to give a very general idea, however, just because a keyphrase has a high amount of competing WebPages this however does not tell you how well optimised these pages are for that particular keyphrase.

Links for that particular keyphrase

You will also need to check to see how many links that the webpage’s that are showing up for in the search engine results pages have pointing to them.

Links to the Domain

If the pages that are showing up are internal pages you will also need to check how strong the domain is as this can help with ranking as well.

Anchor text links

This is a difficult one; the amount of links that these competing webpage’s have pointing to them with the anchor text of the keyphrase will also have a large effect on there rankings so this needs to be checked also. This also leads onto many other factors for example the strength of the page that is linking to said page and how related it is to that webpage. This can all be difficult to track.

This process can take a lot of time and effort but is worth it as you do not want to optimise your website for unachievable keyphrase that is why I would say leave it to the people who know what to look for and what to check as this will save you bucket loads of time and money.
